Eschweiler accident: Three dead and several injured after regional train derails near Cologne

At least three people have died and dozens more have been injured after a regional train derailed near the western German city of Cologne on Thursday, February 3, 2023.

The train, operated by regional transport company Deutsche Bahn, was travelling from Cologne to the town of Euskirchen when it derailed at around 11am local time in the town of Eschweiler.

The cause of the accident is not yet known, but police have said that they are investigating the possibility of sabotage.

The derailment has caused widespread disruption to rail services in the region, with trains between Cologne and Euskirchen being suspended.

Emergency services are at the scene and are working to free passengers who are still trapped inside the train.
